It’s funny how you can live someplace like Smith Mountain Lake and miss experiencing some of its most scenic and popular offerings. I can’t think how many times I have heard someone say how they had never visited a place close to them that people came from all over the United States to see. Well, don’t let that happen to you.
The Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway includes three of the most famous mountain peaks in Virginia. The area has a lovely lodge on a small lake, a great restaurant and picnic area as well as a visitor center, campground, and some excellent hiking trails. The trails offer a fantastic view of the three closely spaced mountains and a small valley with a lake. You can also watch living demonstrations and tours of Johnson Farm, which was built in the 1850s.
