Smith Mountain Lake, Va. is an area that reaps a plentiful harvest from a wide variety of plantings. That statement is true in many avenues of life here. The lake was once stocked with fish and now can be harvested for a variety of fish both for sport and eating. Folks with business savvy began small businesses and now the area is one of the fastest growing on the East Coast. A few people who saw the beauty of lakeside living made their homes here and now people come from everywhere to live here.
In the New Testament, we find a deeper understanding of this principle: Galatians 6:7,8 says “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” This verse clearly states that whatever seed you sow determines the harvest you’ll reap.
We cannot expect to sow bad seed and yet reap a good harvest. The opposite is also true. If we sow good seeds, eventually we will be rewarded by seeing blessings result if we don’t give up. Sometimes we may have to wait for a time, like a farmer who cares for and watches his garden grow, but there will be a harvest if we persevere.
Another relevant verse: 2 Corinthians 9:6 says, “Remember this, Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously .” This fall, I encourage you my friends to sow thoughtfully and generously, and then hold on tight. You will be glad you did.
