There are instances in our lives when helping others can sometimes actually not be the easiest of situations for us, however, we help others because it is the right thing to do and we always feel better once we’ve helped them. Well, here’s one of those times when we can definitely help others AND have a great time doing it!
On Saturday, May 20th at 11:00 am beginning at Bridgewater Plaza, the 9th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run will be held. The idea is that each boat that is entered into the Poker Run must carefully follow a pre-chartered course, stopping by checkpoints along the way and picking up their “poker card” at each checkpoint. The boat with the best poker hand at the end of the run is the winner. Speed is most definitely NOT a factor here… safety is priority number one.
If “the luck of the cards” is not on your side, don’t worry! There are other chances to stake your claim as other awards given out will include Best Appearing Crew, Best Appearing Boat, Boat with the Most Registered Players, Worst Poker Hand, and more.
Best of all, outside of all this fun, funds will be raised! Funds in the past have been donated to the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue Company, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Friends of the Lake, the American Red Cross/Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund, and the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce.
Registration information can be found on the Smith Mountain Lake Boating Association website. Spaces for 75 boats are available and filling up fast! Information in this article was originally published in the Smith Mountain Lake Eagle.
