There are several wineries and vineyards near Smith Mountain Lake, and since 2003 we have also had The Virginia Wine and Food Society to advance the appreciation of this fruit of the vine. Our Mission: The Virginia Wine and Food Society advances the appreciation and enjoyment of Virginia Wine and Food by connecting its members and enthusiasts.
The Virginia Wine and Food Society is a member-supported organization incorporated in the State of Virginia in March 2003. It is a non-partisan, non-profit, non-stock corporation of individual and business members and corporate sponsors. Currently, we are in the process of receiving our tax-exempt status status from the IRS.
We achieve our goal of promoting the appreciation and enjoyment of Virginia wine, food, and tourism to Virginia Wine Country by:

-Conducting regular, independent professional tastings of Virginia wines and publishing the results in the Society’s Virginia Wine Guide. |

| -Publishing a monthly Virginia Wine and Food Society Newsletter on wine and food news and events for members. | |
| -Promoting wineries, restaurants, hotels/inns/b&bs, and retail wine and food shops as tourist destinations. | |
| -Sponsoring, individually and with business members, wine and food events for the general public as well as the trade to promote the appreciation of Virginia wine and food as well as tourism to Virginia Wine Country. | |
